The South Downs Way runs for 160km from Winchester to Eastbourne; the two-day section described here covers the spectacular eastern extent of the route. It starts from Lewes and ends at Eastbourne: each day’s walk can be done separately, or you can stay at Southease and make a two-day walk of it. On day one you walk across the Ouse valley, crisscrossed with water channels, via a couple of ancient Sussex villages – Iford and Rodmell. You can eat and stay at the YHA hostel in Southease, or return to Lewes from here by train. Book in advance for the hostel – you can also have dinner here. On day two you ascend the downs for a longish hike before descending to picturesque Alfriston. The route then leads through the lush Cuckmere Valley to the undulating cliffs at Beachy Head and on to Eastbourne. This second day should only be undertaken if you’re fit: there are some fantastically wiggly contours to contend with.
